Kerr to Launch Customer Protection Program

ORANGE, CA – June 7, 2011 - Kerr Corporation, a leading manufacturer of technology for dental procedures, has announced the launch of a new customer protection program. The program has been created in the interest of protecting Kerr customers from fraudulent, counterfeit or grey market products and preserving the company’s reputation for quality across its entire spectrum of offerings.

“We are taking several steps designed to proactively prevent counterfeiters from being able to generate and/or distribute fraudulent product,” said Leo Pranitis, Kerr’s Vice President of Global Marketing and Innovation. “We’ll be rolling out our protection plan in several stages over the coming months with the ultimate goal being to discourage tampering and prevent reuse or placement of counterfeit items in Kerr packaging coming into the North American channel. By incorporating this program, both the reputation of the Kerr brand and our customers are protected.”

Pranitis added that the best way to be certain that products purchased are legitimate is to only buy from an authorized Kerr dealer (http://www.kerrdental.com/kerrdental-contact-2#dealers) or by contacting the company directly at 1-800-KERR-123.

“As our products are strictly regulated by the FDA and Health Canada, it is important that there is full traceability from manufacturer to distributor to clinician and ultimately to the patient,” said Pranitis. “That chain of custody is lost when products move outside authorized distribution channels. Our goal is to ensure lasting smiles for years to come.”

The infiltration of counterfeit and grey market dental products into North America is a growing issue of concern affecting the dental industry, and Kerr has chosen to proactively address it as a form of quality assurance for its customers. Counterfeit dental products pose obvious safety and efficacy risks, while grey market products are sourced from markets outside of the United States where storage times and conditions can be compromised.

Manhattan dentist sent 31 pounds of pot, worth $50K, in the mail

A Manhattan dentist got a mystery UPS package Friday from a real dope - it was filled with 31 pounds of very pungent pot.

Dr. Richard Lyons couldn't believe his nose when he opened the box that was delivered to his Chinatown office.

"From my 70's days, when I saw the green and smelled it, I knew it was marijuana," said Lyons, whose graying ponytail could qualify him for a bit role in a Cheech and Chong movie.

Lyons, 61, said he had no idea how the pot - worth up to $50,000 on the street - wound up at his place, but he immediately called the cops.

"I was shocked - shocked! And annoyed," he said. "Even if I got an ounce of marijuana, I would have notified the police.

"It's not legal. I didn't buy it!"

Lyons said the pot was wrapped in a black plastic bag "with a bunch of baby wipes on top" that had been placed inside a plastic bin and then the box.

It arrived at his office at 10:30 a.m. and was signed for by an assistant. When he got in about 3 p.m., he opened the box to discover the tightly packed fresh-plucked buds.

He said called police, but when they hadn't arrived after an hour, he got nervous that the intended recipient might show up to collect the weed - and called the press.

When cops arrived at the office on Worth and Mott Sts. - where a large red canopy advertises "Dr. Toothy's Dental World" - they had to borrow blue dental masks because the fumes gave them a headache.

The box had a return address for a Gwendaline Lyons in Katy, Texas. No listing could be found for the person.

A UPS spokeswoman said the express delivery service would open an investigation in the matter and contact the NYPD.

Both dental isolation systems hold the patient’s mouth open, keep the tongue out of the working field and guard the patient’s airway –— all while continuously evacuating saliva and excess moisture. Working with Isolite Systems’ dental isolation technology allows dental professionals to perform procedures more efficiently with greater control over the oral environment.

The super-soft Isolite mouthpiece used with the Isolite and Isodry systems makes for a more comfortable experience for the patient, allowing the patient to rest his/her jaw on a soft-bite block versus having to hold it open for the entire dental procedure. With the tongue comfortably retracted by the Isolite mouthpiece, it is kept safely away from the dental procedure and the dental drill in order to avoid unintentional injury of the tongue. Additionally, the Isolite mouthpiece shields the patient’s airway as an added measure of safety to prevent inadvertent aspiration of a foreign body, such as a broken or extracted tooth, crown or implant.

With the addition of the new small DV mouthpiece to its product line-up, Isolite Systems now makes available six distinct super-soft mouthpieces that are designed to fit patients varying in size — from small children to large adults.

The new size was developed for patients that need a small bite-block, but have a relatively deeper vestibule compared to other small-mouthed people. For these patient types, the new shape and design of the small DV mouthpiece allows for an even more complete tongue retraction and better fit in the mouth. Its expanded cheek shield shape provides improved suction that goes deeper into the vestibule. The new design also features a more stable bite block that provides for additional suction capacity behind the bite block, insuring saliva does not pool behind the mouthpiece.

The new small DV mouthpiece was developed based on customer feedback. “We had such a positive response to the medium DV mouthpiece that we introduced, we wanted to bring those advantages to our smaller-sized mouthpiece,” said Dr. Thomas Hirsch, Isolite Systems co-founder and director of clinical relations.

Nobel Biocare CEO to step down

February 16, 2011 -- Dental implant maker Nobel Biocare announced today that its CEO, Domenico Scala, is leaving the company. The board of directors has appointed Richard Laube, a former executive with Nestlé, as its new CEO, effective May 1.

The board thanked Scala for his contributions to the company since taking over as CEO in 2007 and said his leaving was part of a "regular succession process." But some analysts suggested that Scala was replaced because the company has not performed well under his guidance. During Scala's tenure, Nobel Biocare's stock has lost 80% of its value and the company lost its market share lead to rival Straumann, according to a story in the Wall Street Journal.

"Scala took over the company at a highly critical time, and during the last three and a half years he has created a new footing, established a first-rate management team and successfully expanded the product portfolio," Nobel Biocare said in a press release.

Scala will be available to the company in an advisory capacity until the end of October 2011.

Nobel Biocare will report its 2010 financials on February 17, and the company's net profit is expected to be 50 million euros ($67 million), half of what it was in 2009, according to the Journal.

Here's what I want answered:

Is it ok to question, routinely, "Is this all there is in life?"

Some days, I'm sitting at the dental chair and thinking about how crazy life is that I'm using a drill to cut a hole in someone's tooth and filling it with some type of replacement material. How does this help me in understanding life and why "my time" on Earth is valuable?

Don't get me wrong...I've had many incredible experiences...being married...watching the miracle of birth of my three daughters...meeting so many wonderful people throughout my life...and...at the same time...I wonder if I'm the only person who questions what's it all about?

Some days I feel like I'm living some ridiculous scene from the movie, "Groundhog Day", where I'm basically doing the same thing over and over and over and I can't get to the next day. Other days I feel like I'm the "King of the World" and I know exactly what it is that I want and how to get there. I feel like my life can be summed up like "Mr. Toad's Wild Ride" at Disney World...with an endless array of twists and turns...some expected...most unexpected...that come at me from all directions...on my way to wherever.

What I really enjoy doing more than anything is helping other people...and I'm not just talking about fixing their teeth...I'm talking about helping them feel empowered to go beyond their self-imposed limitations and helping them reach new levels of awareness. ACE has helped me accomplish this in so many ways. This truly is a labor of love for me. I am more proud of this email network and the life that it's taken on than anything I've accomplished because it has allowed me...and all of you...to connect with each other. We all get to experience the good, the bad, the happiness & tragedy of each other's lives and whether we all want to admit it or not, WE ARE ALL FRIENDS!

What I really want is for the closeness of this group to continue to grow and to continually help others in need. Each new day brings different challenges to each of us on this group. Sometimes we can face those challenges and overcome them on our own. Other times, we need a little help from our friends.

Often times I think "If I died today, would my life have been worthwhile?" As long as my answer is "Yes" then I know I'm doing ok. Don't get me wrong...I want to live until I'm 120...but whatever is in store for me, I know that I acted more times than not on the opportunities that have been sent my way. Sometimes I didn't get the expected result. In fact, many times I really messed things up! But, I took away from each experience the knowledge of how not to do things and became stronger and better for having gone through the experience.

Life is short. Our timelines in the history of life amounts to nothing more that a speck. Why are we here? What will we leave behind?

What I really want is for ACE to become different that any other group out there. I want our group to really...truly...openly...care for one another. I want all of you and anyone who joins in the future to feel like ACE is where I can hang out with my friends and I can talk about anything (dentistry or life) at anytime and I know that I'll always get an honest answer. I want people to look back and see how this group nurtures people to accomplish their own personal definitions of success. We support you in your growth and help you achieve your goals...whatever they may be...in dentistry and life.

That's why I'm here and that's what I'd like to see happen.

Then, my answer to the question "Is this all there is in life?" will be, "Yes. And isn't it marvelous?"

After spending a weekend at a recent course, I was thinking on the way home about how very fortunate for me to be a member of ACE. I have learned FAR AND AWAY more from this group, and the courses that are recommended AND offered at the meetings, than any other organization to which I have belonged....and there have been many. I feel I can get any mentor, any course, any email of any one I need to get info on any subject, any hands-on or any material needed for ANYTHING! I am just a phone call away from any need I may have, any problem I have encountered (and there have been many) or any shoulder for advice.

There are so many talents from which we can all pull, and all contribute, even in some small way to help any situation. No matter how successful, or how desperate one can be, there is always someone who will reach out.

Many of us have hit on high times, and very low times. The ACERs understand this. At one point each of us has experienced the diversity of successes, and can empathisize, encourage, recommend or pat on the back.

b. The temperature in Arizona in November is quite comfortable. You can expect daytime highs in the 80s and nighttime lows in the 50s.

c. As is typical with most seminars, there will be air conditioning so you may want to wear long pants and bring a sweater or light jacket to the meeting rooms that you can remove if you get warm.

6. Are there CE credits available?

a. Yes, ACE is an approved ADA CERP provider. You can receive up to 24 hours of approved Dental Continuing Education for attending this event.

7. Are there any social events?

a. Yes, there are 2 planned social events.

b. On Thursday November 12 there is a meet & greet cocktail reception with food stations in the exhibit hall. Many otherwise excellent systems remain unused in the office place because they either take too much time, are hard to use, or both. The sinking economy, joblessness and 401(k) crashes have created so much stress that some Bay State dentists say teeth grinding and clenching is at an all-time high, keeping people up at night and taking a bite out of their wallets.

“This is by far the worst I have ever seen,” said Dr. David Harte, a 30-year Milton dentist who has seen a threefold increase in teeth grinding and clenching. “People are under so much stress with job situations and finances and retirement funds tanking that they are just clenching and grinding. People are literally snapping off corners of the teeth.”

Dentists at Varinos Dental Associates in Peabody are fitting more patients with mouthguards to stop the painful practice, and many blame household finance stress, said office manager Nancy MacDonald.

“They are waking up with headaches and jaw pain,” she said.

Stress is one cause of teeth grinding and clenching, and can result in worn-down teeth or chipped teeth, tender gums, headaches, severe jaw pain, neck aches and muscle spasms.

Fixing the problem can be costly. A new crown on a fractured tooth can cost hundreds of dollars, and a dentist-designed mouth guard run as much as $600.

Holistic Technologies in Arlington, which sells a $395 biofeedback headband that reduces grinding, has seen sales double in recent months.

“When people get more stressed, they tend to clench more,” said CEO Lee Weinstein.

Wendy, a Quincy mom of two teens in college, said worries about her boyfriend’s job security exacerbated her teeth grinding. Now she wears a nightguard.

“It just got progressively bad because of all the stress going on,” said Wendy, who didn’t want her last name used to protect her privacy. “I’d wake up in the middle of the night with the grinding. I’d wake up totally unrested.”

One Dartmouth dentist says he worries more that cash-strapped families will skip dentist visits and procedures to save money - a decision that will cost more in the long-run.

“In dentistry, when you don’t have things fixed, they don’t get better, they get worse,” said Milton A. Glicksman, president of the Massachusetts Dental Society. “You’ll find people who feel they cannot afford to go to the dentist, and that’s where you’ll find the biggest impact.”

Dentists: Smiling in the Face of Recession

The one guy is 63, just lost his job at a health insurer, and is afraid he'll never find another one. The other has three kids, one in college, and lost his construction job. The stress caused them to grind their canines and molars. So they each wound up in the office of Dr. Woody Oakes, a dentist from New Albany, Ind., with a fractured tooth. "You do see that — someone lost their job, and they come in with their jaws clenched," says Oakes, who is also editor of the Profitable Dentist magazine. "You can fracture your teeth when you do that."

There's at least one profession for which the recession might not bite: dentistry. According to Sageworks, a firm that tracks private-company financial performance, dentists' offices had higher profit margins than any other industry in 2008. With average profit margins at 17%, dentistry outpaced accounting, tax preparation, bookkeeping and payroll services, legal services and mining support services among the top five performing professions in '08. Dental margins rose about 1.5% from 2007, according to Sageworks. (Read "25 People to Blame for the Financial Crisis.")

What could be keeping dentistry strong during this recession? Sure, tooth-grinding and nervous eating habits — I'm going to chomp on chocolate as an escape — may be driving traffic to the drill. But economic forces are more likely to be responsible. Dentists note that patients who receive limited or no insurance tend to skip cleanings and other dental maintenance during tough times as they look to save a few bucks. But dentists pick up even more revenue later on. Patients who've skipped checkups now have achy teeth and have no choice but to undergo a more expensive procedure. "It's human nature to say, 'I can't afford that right now, and if it doesn't hurt, I don't have a problem,'" says Dr. Lawrence Spindel, a dentist in New York City. "Then all of a sudden you need a root canal."

At the same time, insured patients want to hit the chair while they're still lucky enough to have the insurance. "We're seeing that a lot of folks are fearful of losing their jobs," says Rick Willeford, founder and president of the Academy of Dental CPAs, whose members provide accounting and tax-prep work for some 7,000 dentists across the country. "So they want to use their benefits. That has helped keep revenues strong." Spindel, who had his best year ever in 2008, says last spring he saw a "miniboomlet" in these types of cases. "People know that if they're going to lose their job, they damn well better use their dental insurance," Spindel says. "They say, 'Do as much as you can do, and you need to do it within 30 days!' "

You would think cosmetic dentistry would completely collapse during a recession. Who wants to part with thousands of dollars just to look good? But some evidence suggests that this business is still healthy. For example, sales of Snap-on Smile, a cosmetic device that snaps over your teeth, rose 22.2% in the fourth quarter of '08 compared with the third quarter. December sales were 62% higher than those in October. The device costs between $2,500 and $4,000 for a full-mouth restoration, a much cheaper alternative than restorative veneers, which can cost $30,000 to $50,000. Snap-on Smile CEO Adam Cotumaccio has heard feedback that some patients buy the product for very practical purposes. "In this job market, you want to feel good, you want to look good going into an interview," says Cotumaccio. Plus, people are still spending money on big-ticket dentistry. Dr. Cary Ganz, a dentist from Garden City, N.Y., has done several $50,000-to-$60,000 procedures this year. "It has amazed me," says Ganz, who also reports having his best year ever. "Regardless of the economy, people still have the need to take care of themselves."

Dentistry is not pain-free. Willeford reports an overall fourth-quarter slowdown among the Academy of Dental CPAs' clients. These dentists serve patients across a broad socioeconomic spectrum. "We're seeing a lot more open appointment books through March," says Willeford. "If people keep losing jobs, we're going to edge off a cliff." Dr. Roger Levin, CEO of the Levin Group, a dental-management consultancy, is also very cautious. "Traditionally, it takes six to 12 months for economic trends to affect dental practice," he says. "The full impact of the downturn may be yet to come."

Dentists should still stay warily optimistic, however. "People think, Rather than lose all this money in the market," says Ganz, "I might as well put it my mouth."

It’s a great character trait and one that all of us at ACE have tried to emulate by putting all of you first. In the movie, George Bailey gets into some financial difficulty and doesn’t know where to turn for money to keep the business going…oh, he asks the curmudgeon old Mr. Potter who’s trying to take over the town by buying everyone up, but Potter tells him he’s going to go to prison. George is extremely distraught and thinks that the only way that he can make things right is by taking his own life and allowing his heirs to cash in on his life insurance policy. Well, we all know where the story goes, an angel named Clarence comes down and shows George what life would be like if he weren’t born. It’s one of the most powerful sections of a movie that you will ever witness because it makes the viewer realize how important life is and how each of our lives are intertwined. Well, there is a happy ending to this story as George’s wife (leave it to a woman to figure out the easy solution) asks the people who George has helped throughout his life to now come and help him…and they do. George makes enough money to keep his business open and Clarence even gets some wings.

Right now, ACE is kind of like George Bailey when he doesn’t know where to turn.

First and most important, any bite including a TENS bite should not be done WITHOUT a proper diagnosis!! Without the proper diagnosis, there is room for error.....allot of error.
There are other ways and types of bite registration techniques and each have their place!
Lastly, not EVERYTHING can be included in an email and every patient should be treated as an individual case.
In otherwords, we assume no responsibility if you mess up. :-)

Basic Step by Step Instructions:

First, most patients will be unfamiliar with the muscle stimulating process. Explaining what they will experience is important.

Step 1: Occlusal Connections and Placement

Connect the electrodes to the electrode cable(s)

Option A: Occlusal Two Channel three electrodes for balance of left and right muscles of mastication: use one electrode over each coronoid notch one electrode at the back of the neck for a total of three electrodes.

Option B: Occlusal and Cervical Two Channel with balance between the Occlusion and Cervical areas: use one electrode for each wire for a total of four electrodes. One electrode over coronoid notch and trapezius bilaterally.

Step 3. Clean the skin and dry
Wipe electrode sites with rubbing alcohol and dry

Step 4. Occlusal Placement

A. Occlusal TWO channel (three electrodes with left and right balance) Place each electrode with black wire over coronoid notches and the electrode with both red wires on the middle of the back of the neck below the hair line (if using Dolotens-if J4/5 you can have one dedicated "lead" to the neck electrode).

Caution: Care should be used to place the electrodes accurately. If the patient feels a pounding in their head, the electrodes have not been properly placed. The electrode on the back of the neck should be accurately placed in the exact centre of the middle of the neck to achieve balanced muscle contraction.

Occlusal AND Cervical Placement

B. For two channels, place one channel over coronoid notches and the other channel two wires over trigger points on the trap muscles.
Note: In the case of sideburns and beards, consider shaving the area.

Step 5. Turn the unit on.

Note: The unit automatically starts at the lowest setting when turned on. At any time if a pause in pulse stimulation is desired (for example when recording EMGs), press (P) to pause (with some units) and to restart the stimulation at the same setting, press (P) again. The stimulation will automatically and slowly ramp to the previous intensity.

Step 6. Increase Intensity slowly by and always ensure the patient is comfortable. Increase intensity slowly until the lower front teeth have a very slight upward movement, 1 to 2 mm. (place a little finger between the anterior teeth and have the patient close and rest their teeth on the little finger and adjust intensity for the first slight perceptive squeeze of the teeth on the finger). Adjust for balance and patient comfort depending on configuration.
The cervical area should have a light, gentle comfortable contraction or squeeze. If the teeth are tapping with each pulse, turn the intensity down until the mandible has slight movement without the lower and upper teeth contacting.

Note: After a few minutes, the muscles may "loosen up" and the movement of the mandible increase without change in intensity. It is common to reduce the intensity after a few minutes to avoid the teeth from tapping.

Step 7. Maintain the patient in a comfortable, quiet, relaxed upright environment for about 20-60 minutes.

Note: To evaluate balance on each side of the face, place one finger on each side of the mandible just below the electrodes and feel the masseter muscles for balance. Patient perception of balance is sometimes helpful. Visual observation of the muscles of facial expression are less valid when determining balanced muscle contraction.

Step 8. Establishing a physiologic rest occlusion, a position of the mandible needs to be found where the muscles are at relaxed without fatigue. Neuromuscular stimulation and a muscle rested position of the mandible are valuable for these clinical procedures:
1. Mandibular Rest Position
2. Occlusal Adjustments
3. Taking a bite registration, Neuromuscualar maxillo-mandibular relationship
4. Impressions and moulding denture boarders
5. Mastication and Cervical muscle relaxation
Note: The optimal mandibular rest position is where the muscles are all simultaneously at their rested muscle length and tone. Muscles of mastication are highly differentiated and even a few muscle fibers can be hyperactive while the majority of the muscle fibbers may be relaxed creating an muscle hyperactive maxillo-mandibular relationship. To sustain muscle relaxation, the clinician should start from a position which has relaxed muscles.
Step 9: Mandibular Rest Position, clinical suggestions:
A. Ensure patient is relaxed in an upright position, sitting or standing.

B. Make a mark on the patient's nose and chin for reference.

C. Evaluate aesthetics (vertical, lateral and anterior/posterior profile position of the mandible, habitual and desired).

D Evaluate disc position and joint sounds for possible joint position/disc improvement. (Seriously deranged TMJ disorder patients may take additional considerations.)

E. Measure the distance between the marks of the nose and chin (B) when the patient is biting in their habitual occlusion and compare with the aesthetic (C) and disc (D) considerations. Measure the distance between the nose and chin marks when the patient is relaxing and teeth are apart and compare with the habitual mandibular position (B).

If the patient is aesthetically over-closed, have the patient let their lips part, tell the patient to slightly open and relax. (The jaw will slowly close to its rested position. Re-evaluate and repeat if necessary.)

If the jaw is too open, tell the patient to slightly close with lips together and relax. For the discs, have the patient open and protrude, slowly closing and relax without popping off their discs. Repeat these movements as necessary.

F. Ensure the patient has a stable resting position and the jaw repeatedly returns to the position of rest (is stable without drifting up and down). If rest is not stable, consider additional TENS time and moist heat on the muscles.

Step 10: Taking an occlusal registration

A Have the patient open and place a slow set firm bite registration material between the teeth, leaving the TENS on (preferably subthreshold) during the entire set of the material. (The gentle pulsing provides about 1 to 2 mm of freeway space.

Tell the patient to relax their muscles, relax their tongue and slowly let the mandible float up. Have the patient close until the distance between the two marks on the nose and chin are at the selected rested position chosen above in 8 F.

Note: Although some prefer to PULSE into the BR material, it may be better to have the TENS be "SUBTHRESHOLD" during the actual BR procedure as the stimulation is neutrally mediated there is stimulation of OPENING AND CLOSING muscles. Therefore, by being subthreshold, the muscles remain relaxed and the patient slowly drifts into the BR material under the doctor's verbal guidance.

Note: If stimulating trapezius and mandibular muscles, before taking the bite registration, reduce or eliminate the trapezius stimulation as per Jankelson.

C. After the bite registration has set, confirm in the mouth the recorded bite registration position and expected aesthetic and disc positions are in fact as desired and the patient is comfortable without strain or stress closing into the bite registration.

Caution: The marks on the skin (soft tissues) do not always accurately represent the changes between the maxilla and mandible. The occlusal registration may need to be repeated to achieve the optimal position of physiologic rest, aesthetics, and joint arrangement.

Caution: The Doctor should avoid touching the patient during the occlusal registration. Any manipulation of the mandible by the doctor may negatively influence the result. Taking more than one bite registration, permits the patient to subjectively compare the differences.

Step 11: Turn the unit off. Remove the electrodes, discard the electrodes and clean the wires and device with rubbing alcohol or appropriate surface disinfectant.

Step 12: Evaluating the occlusal registration: Before any definitive restorative treatment permanently altering the dentition, the doctor should complete a thorough diagnosis which often includes a reversible temporary evaluation of the altered maxillo-mandibular relationship. Clinicians frequently use the bite registration to mount models on an articulator and construct a lower acrylic laboratory device (sometimes referred to as an orthosis, splint or guard) with minimal or no occlusal anatomy.

For those on this forum that do not know, Peter Maroon is an "Over The
Edge" New England Patriots Fan! The day after the Patriots loss in the
Super Bowl last year, Peter was spouting off about how the Pats were
going to get back and win the Super Bowl in 2009. So, Pete and I
entered into a friendly wager with me stating that they would not! I
put up some Carson's Ribs versus New England Lobster. Well, Pete paid
up last week and on my doorstep last Wednesday was this big guy, about 2
1/2 pounds. My daughter (that's her hand) and I had fun preparing him,
I had never cooked a live lobster before! When my wife got home from
work, we had a fantastic meal of clam chowder and lobster along with our
salads. Sorry I did not get any pictures of him on the table, my
fingers had to much butter on them to hold the camera by then!

Thanks to everyone who made ACE Dallas 2009 Symposium on NeuroMuscular Dentistry a tremendous success.
