The probe uses the Diagnodent's laser fluorescence technology to differentiate between calculus and healthy tissue. Once the difference is detected, it makes a sound and displays a numerical readout. The probe is especially useful for detecting calculus left behind after planing and scaling, since it can detect and measure subgingival calculus in periodontal pockets as deep as 9 mm.
"The Diagnodent's audible detection and measurable values make more patients aware of their calculus levels, leading to increased patient compliance with the recommended treatment," says a KaVo press release. Available nationwide through KaVo dealers, the device retails at $320.
